Thrifty makeover: Store turned home gets energy-saving upgrades thanks to Habitat, PG&E

Ignacio and Maria Campos moved into their South Dos Palos home about three decades ago, and from the beginning the former secondhand store needed some work.

The Camposes, both 59, raised their six children in the home and are doing the same with two of their grandchildren.

"It's a major blessing to have these people come into my home, these people volunteering -- giving their time," Maria Campos said in Spanish. "I hope this is the start of my family helping other families."

Habitat for Humanity Westside and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. volunteers started work on the home Saturday. PG&E committed $6,500 last month to Habitat Westside for solar and
